President & Chief Executive Officer - PCEO Center for Student Missions - CSM NO RELOCATION REQUIRED CSM is a conduit for urban missions in a hosted, safe environment. It connects young Suburban/Rural Dwellers (SRDs) with urban dwellers (UDs) and operates in near-perfect balance of ancient-future mission delivered through an earthbound-virtual platform. Conceived a generation ago, CSM (www.csm.org) was born and nurtured by executive leadership and a board deeply committed to its success. Now it is poised for a leap to destiny through the appointment of a PCEO who is likewise prepared for the challenge and the opportunity of transforming both SRDs and UDs. Thoroughly conversant, the new PCEO will be at ease in an urban corner market as in a suburban organic food store. Further, their allegiance as a follower of Jesus is irrevocable and they habitually have coffee with the publicans. Essential experience includes urban missions leadership, multi-site organizational management, program and operations expertise. Advantage would be gained from experience in short term missions, multi-level staff management, and seven-figure budget responsibility.
CSM Center for Student Missions Position Profile President & Chief Executive Officer Setting
They’d dropped the kids at the Youth Centre; their daughter and her friend from school, and headed out for a weekend get-away for just the two of them. They needed to reconnect and see if they could come to agreement on a realistic budget. They were definitely living beyond their income and the debt service was escalating. The girls were excited but admittedly apprehensive. They were going on a youth missions trip to the big city. They’d be safe, but would experience what it’s like to be homeless. They’d eat and sleep pretty much like urban kids. The schedule included working at one of the food distribution centers, eating at an ethnic restaurant and a tour of the neighborhood. It was just an hour away in the church van and didn’t sound particularly appealing to them, but she’d wanted to go and bring her friend who didn’t attend church at all. She was a good kid and they hoped she’d turn out ok. They didn’t know where their daughter acquired this interest in helping The Poor. Sure, the youth group delivered Thanksgiving groceries for shut-ins. They had a foreign missions emphasis around Christmas and collected money. And now she was talking about going on a student summer mission to an island somewhere off the coast of Ireland. What they couldn’t imagine was the change of worldview their daughter was about to undergo. At 15, she was going to find out a lot more about God’s love...
Overview CSM is a visionary Christian ministry whose time has emerged. It was founded a generation ago to connect young rural and suburbanites with urban dwellers. Now CSM is a conduit for urban missions involvement in a hosted, safe environment. CSM responds to the ancient mandate of attending to the omnipresent Poor, widows and orphans through a practically virtual delivery platform. With a modest home office as operations hub, the nine city sites are embedded in local neighborhoods. The President & Chief Executive Officer (PCEO) is based independent of the home office and city sites. Role The role of the PCEO is to lead, manage and represent CSM (www.csm.org) with executive staff responsibility for its health and well-being. The role of spokesperson is essential and pervasive. As soul leader, the PCEO encourages spiritual growth, discipleship, e.g. nurturing the fundamental matter of the resurrected Jesus among us. He/she communicates vision, oversees the organizational strategic planning and assures a fiscally sound enterprise. The PCEO relates with the Board, externally with constituents and partners, and internally with Staff. He/she reports to the Chair of the Board of Directors and serves as a member of the Board. Experience Desired The credentials of the new PCEO should be heavy with missions leadership, evolved, productive relationships and sustained capacity over time. In this regard, the PCEO is a prudent innovator, an intuitive planner, and a moderate risk-taker. Work focusing on compassion, social justice, reconciliation, discipleship and formation would specifically contribute to future of CSM. Agility in cultures other than one’s birth community would be helpful. Leadership experience in NPOs serving multi-generational, social and economic populations would be beneficial. Effective bottom-line management of operating budgets of low seven figures is entirely adequate. The last ten years should have been devoted to ministry focused on youth, young urban dwellers, or compellingly related other involvement. An individual with a discernable history of developing others toward active vocational alignment, thriving in relationship building and conflict resolution situations (personal or professional) would be fit the profile. Staff leadership of modest numbers and organizational depth is perfectly acceptable if staged with an appropriately relational style and an evident history of success. Experience identifying, crafting and nurturing partnerships, coalitions, joint ventures and other mutually beneficial relationships with compatible organizations is good. Naturally, a combination of education, certification and experience to equip the PCEO for hands-on leadership of CSM is expected. Initial Job Priorities
Qualities of the President & Chief Executive Officer Individuals with a high degree of alignment with the expectations of CSM leadership would reflect the following:
Expectations of the President & Chief Executive Officer The success of the PCEO of CSM will be judged on three essential factors: comprehensive organizational leadership, wise management of its resources, and responsiveness to the Board. The PCEO’s effectiveness will depend on focus toward accomplishing established goals among Staff, creating collaborative partnerships where feasible, and representing CSM in all venues. A winsome, compelling platform presence is especially appealing. The PCEO can expect support from the Board, cooperation from Staff, and an expanded network among urban ministries and their leaders. Conclusion CSM is approaching a kaleidoscopic moment in the appointment of a new President & Chief Executive Officer. The patterns are shifting to create a familiar-yet-distinct Christian ministry honoring the ancient values of caring for poor and desperate people among us. Delivery systems are thoroughly integrated for optimal support. The Board is committed to the enterprise and Staff are open-minded. Giant footprints of visionary, pioneering achievement are the legacy of retiring leadership, and will be irresistible to the one prepared and called to serve as President & Chief Executive Officer.
